Synicem 1 – Surgical cement
Surgical cements with gentamicin are self-curing acrylic compounds at room temperature that consist of a powder and a liquid component. It is offered in a surgical cement of standard viscosity, suitable for manual application, and another of low viscosity suitable for application with an application system (Syringe or Vacuum Mixer).
The powder component is made up of: a methyl methacrylate polymer (PMMA) with a polymerization initiator that is benzoyl peroxide, a radiopaque agent (barium sulfate) and an antibiotic compound (gentamicin sulfate).
The liquid component consists of methyl methacrylate monomer with stabilizer (hydroquinone) and a polymerization activator (n,n dimethyl p-toluidine).
When the monomer and polymer are brought into contact, properly mixed, the n,n-dimethyl p-toluidine activates the benzoyl peroxide which initiates the polymerization of the monomer.
The polymerization process is progressive and the mixture, fluid at first, becomes pasty to finally reach the solid state. The reaction is exothermic with variable maximum temperatures depending on the volume of cement and the possibility of dissipation.
